What Makes an App a PWA?

Progressive web app (PWA) is a web app which is developed by using a number of technologies and standard patterns to allow them to take advantage of both web and native apps. It allows user to install the app on the mobile, push notification and access the application offline.

An app should meet certain requirements, in order to make it a PWA. The progressive web apps are not built with a single technology. PWA are build and enhanced with modern APIs to deliver enhanced capabilities, reliability and installability using a single codebase.  Regardless of the network, a reliable progressive web app should be fast and dependable. Scrolling and animation should feel smooth in a web application and performance should not stop on load event.  Web applications have become more capable than before. Installed Web Apps run in a standalone window instead of a browser tab, they are launchable from on the user’s home screen, dock, taskbar or shelf. The application should work offline and should be easy to synchronize. The progressive web apps can be searched through search engine and can be shared through URL.  The applications are usable on any device with a screen and a browser.

With a relatively small amount of effort, PWA features can be implemented and can gain many advantages.  As users prefer experiences that are fast, reliable, PWA provides a set of best practices meeting users need. Some of the successful examples of PWA are: Pinterest, Starbucks, Twitter, Forbes, Trivago and Flipkart.
