The End of Adobe Flash

After more than decade, Adobe Flash player, the famous adobe software has officially reached its end on the last day of 2020. Adobe will no longer offer security updates for Flash and has urged people to uninstall it. Adobe will prevent Flash Player form displaying content from 12 January.

Flash has been a huge part of web history since 1996 and was one of the most popular ways for people to stream videos and play games online. It was installed on 99% of the internet connected computers. Flash was more than just animations, it let websites such as YouTube to stream quality videos. Adobe was slow to react as the world was moving towards mobile devices and was not fully compatible. Flash was redundant on smartphones and tablets and was also a security threat.  Adobe did get a version of Flash Player working on smartphones but big brands like Facebook, Netflix, and YouTube were already streaming videos on mobile devices and tablets without Flash. So, in November 2011 Adobe ended its development of Flash Player for mobile devices and yet continued to produce Flash for desktop computers, which suffered from multiple security flaws.

With so many flaws, Adobe announced that Flash Player would retire in 2020 as other technologies such as HTML5 had matured enough to provide a viable alternative without requiring users to install and updated dedicated plug-in. Instructions has been provided by Adobe on how to uninstall Flash Player on its official website.
